Our History
St. Mary's is unique in ways that are more easily felt than stated. We hear it all the time, “There’s something different about the church on West Jackson Street.” Our faith family creates a sense of belonging to last a lifetime. Our history as an early Franciscan parish, the heritage in our German roots, and our vivacious Hispanic ministry and faith culture are some of the things that make us one of a kind.
1852
A few German Catholic families began arranging to have services by a priest who spoke German at the Catholic boy’s school at 810 N. Main St. in Bloomington.
The German Catholics asked their Bishop to send a priest for regular services, and the Bishop agreed.
1867
1869
The parishioners bought some lots on South Water Street (now Taylor) and built a small frame church.
St. Mary’s had its own resident pastors.
1877
1881
The Franciscan Friars of Cincinnati, OH, were placed in charge of St. Mary’s.
The present Gothic church was built and, sometime after that, the brick exterior was plastered to resemble stone blocks.

1944
The church was redecorated in 1944-1945.
The church was completely remodeled with new stained glass windows, a chapel with a baptistery, and an additional rear entrance.
1962
1985
St. Mary’s Hispanic community donated a statue commemorating Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was blessed and placed in the baptistery.
A $250,000 interior renovation was made to the 111 year old church. A new wooden altar, ambo and portable baptismal font were installed. Black, white and pink marble from the old main altar and side altars was used for decorative purposes elsewhere in the church. A black marble panel and steps from the old altar remained in the sanctuary. Two windows covered over sometime in the 1920’s were uncovered and stained glass added. The daily Mass chapel was separated from the church’s side entrance by a see-through partition, and the tabernacle was moved into the chapel. A stained glass window was also installed behind the tabernacle. A glass and wood partition was added to separate the vestibule from the main part of the church.

September 22, 1996 Most Rev. John J. Myers rededicated the church.
After 135 years of service to St. Mary’s community, the Franciscans returned to Cincinnati, and the parish was placed under the care of the Diocese of Peoria.

2017
On September 10, 2017, St. Mary’s celebrated our Sesquicentennial at Central Catholic High School with a Mass celebrated by Most Rev. Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C, and a brunch following. The celebration of the parish’s 150th Anniversary included a new photo directory, commemorative history book, and a mission November 5-7 led by Rev. Dennet Jung, O.F.M.
St. Mary's es única en aspectos que es más fácil sentir que decir. Lo escuchamos todo el tiempo: "Hay algo diferente en la iglesia de West Jackson Street". Nuestra familia de fe crea un sentido de pertenencia que durará toda la vida. En 1852, algunas familias católicas alemanas comenzaron a hacer arreglos para que un sacerdote hablara alemán en la escuela católica para niños ubicada en 810 N. Main St. en Bloomington. En 1867, los católicos alemanes pidieron a su obispo que enviara un sacerdote para los servicios regulares, y el obispo estuvo de acuerdo. En 1869, los feligreses compraron algunos lotes en South Water St. (ahora Taylor) y construyeron una pequeña iglesia de estructura. En 1877, St. Mary's tenía su propio pastor residente, y en 1881 los Frailes Franciscanos de Cincinnati, OH, fueron puestos a cargo de St. Mary's. En 1886 se construyó la actual iglesia gótica y, algún tiempo después, se enyesó el exterior de ladrillo para que pareciera bloques de piedra. La iglesia fue redecorada en 1944-45 y completamente remodelada en 1962, cuando se agregaron nuevas vidrieras, una capilla con un baptisterio y una entrada trasera a la iglesia.

En 1985, la comunidad hispana de St. Mary donó una estatua que conmemora a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, la cual fue bendecida y colocada en el baptisterio. En 1996, se realizó una renovación interior de 250.000 dólares en la iglesia de 111 años. Se instalaron un nuevo altar de madera, un ambón y una pila bautismal portátil. El mármol negro, blanco y rosa del antiguo altar mayor y de los altares laterales se utilizó con fines decorativos en otras partes de la iglesia. En el santuario quedaron un panel de mármol negro y escalones del antiguo altar. Se descubrieron dos ventanas cubiertas en algún momento de la década de 1920 y se agregaron vidrieras. La capilla para la misa diaria estaba separada de la entrada lateral de la iglesia por una partición transparente, y el tabernáculo se trasladó a la capilla. También se instaló una vidriera detrás del tabernáculo. Se añadió un tabique de vidrio y madera para separar el vestíbulo de la parte principal de la iglesia. El 22 de septiembre de 1996, el Reverendo John J. Myers volvió a dedicar la iglesia. En 2016, después de 135 años de servicio a la comunidad de St. Mary, los franciscanos regresaron a Cincinnati y la parroquia quedó bajo el cuidado de la Diócesis de Peoria. El 10 de septiembre de 2017, St. Mary's celebró nuestro Sesquicentenario en Central Catholic High School con una misa celebrada por el Reverendísimo Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C, y un brunch a continuación. La celebración del 150 aniversario de la parroquia incluyó un nuevo directorio de fotografías, un libro de historia conmemorativo y una misión del 5 al 7 de noviembre dirigida por el Rev.
